Jan 2018 to Nov 2018
In 2018 I spent a year on the moon for Ad Astra. It was a super unique and interesting show. The biggest chunk of the movie we worked on was the Lunar Rover Battle sequence. Roy McBride and a small military escort travel through a lawless region of the moon populated by pirates. Their method of travel? Lunar rover. They are trying to get to a military base some distance away. There, the Cephius will take them on the next leg of their journey.
Ad Astra was a difficult show, but it was a lot of fun. We had a great team who worked super hard to make the shots as good as they could be, and it shows in the work. To date Ad Astra remains one of the shows I’m most proud of.
Roy McBride travels by lunar rover, with a military escort from the moon airport to the Cephius spaceship. Along the way they get attacked by pirates.
In a brief horror movie interlude, Roy McBride and the captain of the Cephius go on a spacewalk to see what fun things they can find on the disabled Vesta spacecraft. Only one of them survives!
In the tunnels under Mars, we did some environment work to extend the length of the hallways they are walking through.
Here are some behind the scenes images showing the VFX work on the lunar rover battle sequence. These images are sourced from the Wired video interview, and the VFX Voice article.
